Thomas Kolly, Ambassador of Switzerland to Pakistan visits the OICCI

Mr. Thomas Kolly, Ambassador of Switzerland to Pakistan visited the Chamber on November 27, 2017, for a courtesy call and to learn about the Chamber’s perspective of the country’s business climate. He was accompanied by Mr. Philippe Crevoisier, Consul General in Karachi, Mr. Jordan James Din, Deputy Head of Post / Head of Commercial Section and Mr. Ajwat Arslan Khan, Advisor on Commercial Affairs. The visitors were welcomed by OICCI MC Member Kimihide Ando and Secretary General M. Abdul Aleem.

After a brief introduction about the OICCI profile and activities of the Chamber, M. Abdul Aleem shared with the Ambassador, results of the OICCI sponsored Business Confidence Index survey, wave 15, released in November 2017, which shows that the business community confidence has gone up by a good margin as compared to the last survey, a couple of points from the OICCI members Perception and Investment Survey 2017, which is will shortly be released, members security related survey done in June 2017 – which shows further increase of members positive perception of the country’s security environment, snapshot of OICCI listed members success story reflected in the very good CAGR during the period 2009-16, an overview of the OICCI perspective of the country’s economy and opportunities for foreign investors in Pakistan, as well as the challenges and reasons for the low FDI inflow in recent years, and members CSR contributions. A slide of the Switzerland-Pakistan bilateral trade numbers was also shared

On a query by the Ambassador Kimihide Ando mentioned about the significant undocumented sector which contributes a sizable portion to the GDP of Pakistan, which explains the general prosperity feel in the country.

Mr. Thomas Kolly informed that Swiss investors are quite cognizant of the business potential in Pakistan and in this respect a business and trade delegation from Switzerland, led by the Head of the Swiss Foreign Relations will visit Pakistan in early 2018 to explore investment opportunities. He also mentioned that there was an increase of over 50% in the number of visas issued by the Swiss Embassy in Pakistan in 2017 as compared to 2016.

Both teams agreed to continue close coordination, with OICCI assuring full support for the visit of Swiss investors where OICCI can present a case for investment in Pakistan, supported by actual success stories and experience of foreign investors who are already working in Pakistan. The Ambassador emphasised Switzerland’s commitment to promote investment and increase bilateral trade between Switzerland and Pakistan.

Ambassador Kolly mentioned that he agrees with the OICCI view that Pakistan needs to work on improving the country’s perception in the international media and thanked the OICCI for the balanced information provided.
