Interactive Session of the OICCI Managing Committee with the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

The Managing Committee (MC) of the OICCI had an interactive session with the Prime Minister, Mr. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in his Office in Islamabad on January 10, 2018. The meeting lasted over 80 minutes and was attended by PM Special Assistant on Investment, Mr. Ali J Siddiqui, Secretary to PM, Mr. Fawad Hasan Fawad, Secretary Commerce, Mr. Younus Dagha, Secretary BOI, Ms. Samaira Nazir Siddiqui and, partially, Minister of Commerce, Mohammad Pervaiz Malik (partially).

The OICCI team presented to the PM the results of the Perception and Investment Survey 2017, giving a feedback of OICCI members on various aspects of doing business in Pakistan, highlighting the key positive and negative messages coming out of this important survey, which is conducted every alternate year. This is the second consecutive time that this, much sought after, perspective of foreign investors was launched in a meeting with the Prime Minister – the last Perception and Investment survey 2015, was also unveiled in a similar manner with a presentation to the Prime Minister on January 16, 2016.

The PM was also given a brief overview of OICCI profile, highlights of recently held Business Confidence Survey wave 15, OICCI Security Survey held in June 2017, and the Chamber’s view on Pakistan’s poor World Bank’s 2018 Ease of Doing Business survey rating of 147 out of 190 countries. Based on the feedback from various OICCI surveys, a few comprehensive recommendations were also made to the PM, to improve the business and investment environment to boost FDI in the country. The key recommendations focused on i) need for a structured forum to discuss with the PM and CMs key issues of the investors in the country, ii) prompt resolution of existing issues on taxation, including pending tax refunds, removal of Super tax etc., iii) proactive resolution of growing number of interprovincial coordination issues and iv) need for consistent, transparent and predictable longer term policy and its strict implementation.

The Prime Minister, Mr Shahid Khaqan Abbasi took keen interest in Chamber related matters and complimented the OICCI President Mr Khalid Mansoor for presenting a comprehensive overview of the issues facing local and foreign investors. He agreed with most of the recommendations and conclusions of the chamber, and promised to keep the interaction going with the key stakeholders, including OICCI. The PM also responded to some specific industry related issues raised by some of the MC members.

The PM also appreciated the timing of the Perception Survey, which he mentioned will facilitate his discussion during the Annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos later this month.

Following the meeting , OICCI has now formally launched the 2017 Perception and Investment Survey. A copy of the survey report is being provided to all members this week.
